Adding Fractions with Like Denominators

When Fractions have Like Denominators, only the Numerators need to be Added.

To add these Fractions, first add the Numerators.

The sum of the Numerators becomes the new Numerator.

The Denominator remains the same.

If the resulting Proper Fraction can be reduced, then do so.

Sometimes both the Improper Fraction needs to be changed to a Mixed Number and the resulting Proper Fraction needs to be reduced.

Adding Fractions with Like Denominators


Add the Numerators. Keep the same Denominator.

If the Proper Fraction can be Reduced, then do so.

If the answer is an Improper Fraction, then change it to a Mixed Number.
